What is a transplant?

An organ transplant requires two-person the first is the donor and the second is the recipient.

An organ transplant is required when a patient called the recipient requires a new organ in his body because the existing one is not working properly.

Through organ transplant, doctors remove the organ from the donor's body and place it in the recipient's body.

The donor can be a dead person or even an alive person depending upon the type of transplantation.

What is a pancreas transplant?

Now after knowing what the transplant is, you are probably wondering what is a pancreas transplant.

A pancreas transplant is a surgery that is done to place a healthy and functional pancreas in the recipient's body from the donor's body who is deceased.

Why is a pancreas transplant required?

The pancreas transplant is generally prescribed to people affected with type 1 diabetes.

In type 1 diabetes the pancreas of the patient generates very little or no insulin which affects their blood sugar levels.

To treat this condition, a pancreas transplant is done so that the new and healthy pancreas develops insulin in the body and the patient will not have to inject external insulin into his or her body.

If you are wondering about type 2 diabetes, then let us tell you that type 2 diabetes-related to the problem of the body becoming resistant to insulin and not being able to use it properly rather than the body is not being able to produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels.

So that is why the patient suffering from type 2 diabetes is not usually prescribed a pancreas transplant as a treatment.

Types of pancreas transplants?

There are 4 different types of pancreas transplants done as the treatment.

Pancreas transplant alone or PTA.

  • Pancreas transplant alone is for the recipient who is not suffering from any kind of kidney disease.
  • This procedure just includes the transplantation of a healthy pancreas into the recipient's body.

Simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplant.

  • If there is a risk of kidney failure or kidney damage then it is prescribed to perform a kidney transplant along with the pancreas transplant.
  • Generally, the pancreas transplant is done simultaneously with the kidney transplant, the purpose of this is to implant a healthy kidney and pancreas that will not do any diabetes-related damage to the recipient.

Pancreas transplant after kidney transplant.

  • In this procedure, the kidney transplant is done before the pancreas transplant, and when the recipient recovers from the kidney transplant, then the recipient should be recommended for the pancreas transplant.
  • It is usually done when the recipient faces a long waiting period for a kidney and pancreas donor.

Kidney transplant after pancreas transplant.

  • This procedure is exactly the opposite of the earlier procedure.
  • In kidney after pancreas transplants, the pancreas is transplanted first and when the recipient recovers from the pancreas transplant, then he or she is recommended for the kidney transplant.

What is a kidney transplant?

As we have also mentioned kidney transplantation in our article, so let us tell you about kidney transplants in a summary for you to understand it better.

The kidneys are located just below the ribs on each side of the spine, they are seen as bean-shaped organs.

When the kidneys do not function properly, then kidney transplantation is recommended to place a functional and healthy kidney from the donor to the recipient's body.

For kidney transplantation, the donor can be a dead person and a living person as well.
